¡Quince! Race to 15 in This Quick Dice Game for Spanish Class
Let’s just say that the end of vacation brings Sunday Scaries on overdrive! Especially looking ahead at March, which seems like the longest month! Here in the Northeast U.S., the desperation to see flowers and feel warm air has reached a fever pitch.
Plus, the clock is ticking to get all the curriculum goals met in the remaining months of the year. How can I stay sane and keep kids engaged when I’m barely hanging on myself?
How about introducing another new game?
Today I want to feature my newest game invention: ¡Quince!
Game Set-Up
Since this is a variation of the quick game Blackjack (a card game race to 21), it’s quick to explain.
Super Low-Prep Materials:
Any printed-out text with line numbers on the left margin. Pro-tip: it works best when sentences aren’t split over two different lines.
1 game board (download freebie below!)
1 or 2 dice per group
How to Play:
Form groups of 3.
Distribute the printed-out texts to each student. and one game board per group.
Students Rotate Roles Each Round:
Persona 1, Persona 2, y Lector/a
To Play:
Out of sight* from the Lector/a, personas 1 y 2 randomly write 5 line numbers in their columns. No numbers can be repeated during the round.
Then, the Lector/a reads a line from the story in Spanish or English.
Personas 1 y 2 look for the sentence in the reading. If it matches a number they wrote, they say “Tengo #__!” and they get to choose to either roll a dice once, twice or pass and record the results in the box.
Play continues until one person gets closest to but NOT over 15 after 5 rounds.
*It’s crucial that the Lector/a doesn’t see the numbers on the grid - if so, kids could accuse them of playing favorites when choosing which sentences to read.
More thoughts and a Free Download…
I’ve attached a FREE DOWNLOAD of the ¡Quince! instructions and a blank game board when you sign up for the newsletter below. You’ll also find a growing collection of ready-to-use stories with line numbers in my TpT store, CI Cuentos.
For example…
Check out this compelling story that comes with the game ¡Quince!
Featuring o-ue present-tense stem-changing verbs, this funny short story features Donny, a kid who’s crazy dog won’t sleep because it’s raining. Donny gives him a variety of treats to help him calm down, but what happens when his dog appears to be lactose intolerant?
If you try this, pop back here and let me know how it goes!
Wishing you all the very best,
